Info:

This beautiful example of the Rolex 1680 has a 5367*** serial number dating it to 1978. It has the MK II matte black dial; close examination of the lume plots reveals their colour is a lovely creamy yellow and the hands have the original matching lume with some ageing and a certain amount of oxidation on the steelwork which you get with original hands and not service hands. The original aluminium bezel insert has a good strong colour and good fat font, there's a very small almost indiscernible scratch between 12 & 1 The case has been lightly re-polished at some point (not by me) but it's been done very nicely thank goodness – close examination of the lugs reveal them to be very equal in width with lovely deep chamfers - far better than most examples of this age. The 93150 bracelet dates to 1982, given that the watch dates to late 1978 it's possible that this watch was originally sold in 1982 and that this is the original bracelet – more likely though it's an early replacement (still worth £2,000 in its own right) updates were common at the time due to the weakness of the original folded link bracelets. The movement is the original in-house cal.1575 and it has very recently undergone a full service by our watch maker. THE ROLEX 1680 Arguably the most important watch in history, the Submariner inspired not only future dive watches, but the entire sports watch category. When Swiss explorer Auguste Piccard first took his submarine down to an incredible depth of 3,131m, a specially-designed Rolex accompanied him, and emerged from the water keeping perfect time. This was the inspiration for the 1953 release of the Submariner, a waterproof watch that was sporty yet elegant, commissioned by a Rolex director who was a close friend of Jacques Cousteau. This model, the 1680, is an all-time classic - the last Submariner to feature a bi-directional bezel, but the first with a date window.
